Per votare all’estero occorre essere iscritti all’AIRE (l’anagrafe della popolazione italiana residente all’estero)

Minacce a Lampedusa a chi vuole contestare Berlusconi: “Vi ammazziamo come cani”
(Umberto Lucentini)
From the West nothing new: the war! by Alessandra Mecozzi
The bombing raids on Libya, with their predictable “side effects” in terms of civilian casualties, leave no doubts as to whether military intervention in Libya.
Once again, with tragic hypocrisy, the humanitarian rhetoric is used to cover a new war imposed by the West against the population of an Arab country, Libya. And we see more explicit the opposition to this action by the Arab League, African Union and now in Turkey!.
Although for weeks at a popular uprising, initially unarmed, in the wake of what happened in Tunisia and Egypt, Gaddafi’s government has responded with bombings and massacres, the international community has remained motionless.
UN Resolution 1973 which formally places first the cease-fire and the defense of the civilian population is not only late, but ambiguous, and paved the way for an operation of war under the pressure of governments like France and Britain, interested in gaining a presence in , and the United States, apparently more cautious, having already failed the experience of Iraq and Afghanistan and seeing a revolt also in the Middle East.
Blindly and irrationally, the Italian government, dropped from the league, fearing the ‘invasion’ of refugees, but supported by the opposition, embarks on an adventure war, after having for years comes to the Government of Gaddafi – now loathed dictator – Treats, business and large quantities of weapons.
Waving the banner of human rights of the Libyan population, through military action, which inevitably, given the nature of armed conflict in progress, are outstripping the only no fly zone, while the human rights of thousands of migrants are trumpled on, since many days on the island of Lampedusa,- and even before by the Libyan government on request of the Italian one,- is grotesque and offensive, first to the people of that island, now also exposed to fear of possible reprisals from Libya, and throughout our country.
The march of the Arab “revolutions of dignity”, in search of democracy, freedom and social justice, a great hope of the world, would have earned and deserve from Europe and the international community as a whole, a very different focus, and intelligent support initiative in order to advance, while making the necessary distinctions between different realities. Libya is not either Tunisia or Egypt and the uprising was quickly mixed, taking up arms, in a power struggle inside the regime. This does not alter the character of despotic and repressive regime of Gaddafi, and the need for freedom of that population, but must be considered.
Of the necessary attention, resulting in a predictive capacity, to what is happening in the entire Mediterranean and Middle East, there are no tracks, while the insurgency is spreading. The project of “Greater Middle East” under U.S. control, and allied Arab regimes, at the time launched by Bush, was defeated. . The same Obama’s speech in Cairo open and respectful of the peoples of Islam, it was a sign.
But an alternative to that design can be born, if there is the chance to make a path for the construction of democracy and social justice by the people throughout the area, which today are creating the conditions, and that in the first place Europe should be able and willing to support.
The popular uprisings in these hours are bloodily repressed in Middle Eastern countries, including through the deployment of troops from other countries, like Saudi Arabia to Bahrain, which raised no outraged reaction, and also the ones inYemen, Syria, could be permanently cut short. The demonstrations of Palestinian youth in Gaza and the occupied territories, claiming freedom, unity, democracy, also repressed, are not mentioned either. On behalf of the unbreakable alliance with Israel, the West for decades, has been passing over its massacres, crimes of war, the ongoing violation of human rights and international law ..
We can expect that the “military solution” to the conflict in Libya in support of Western interests, is a bad example for countries such as Tunisia and Egypt, where they have started peacefully, although paying a price in blood, a participatory people’s process towards democracy and decent living conditions, yet fragile and exposed to backlash. The international community, while preaching democracy and human rights, allows different governments, driven by appetites of gas and petroleum, to take weapons, which are the opposite of democracy and justice.
Could have been done differently? Yes, the instrumentation and the diplomatic and political initiative, along with the humanitarian, could – and still hope that we can to avoid a disastrous escalation – To give a different course of action to the international community. Currently there has not even tried, indeed there is a fight about “who’s leading…”.
Tap, once again, to those who have no power, the movement for peace, social justice and environment, to those who are against war and militarism, who work near the migrants and against racism, to denounce hypocrisy of the unlimited humanitarian rhetoric which again fuels the war, to watch carefully and support the arduous journey of the Arab population, to reclaim dignity and hospitality for migrants, to oppose the war.
